Supporting Researchers

The Centre for the Study of Arms History offers research support—both financial and non-financial—to arms historians and researchers in allied fields throughout the course of their careers.

Serving as a hub for students and practitioners the world over, CSAH brings together arms historians, archivists, curators, collectors, professionals, and those in allied fields. CSAH connects researchers with world-class resources, partner institutions, and unique study opportunities. Our current research programmes are outlined on this page.

Naming rights for Scholarships, Fellowships, and Prizes are available to donors and partner institutions that support CSAH financially. Please contact us for details.

Scholarships

Scholarships are open to students progressing to post-graduate study, matching scholars with partnering institutions and supporting further study with a focus on arms history. The first CSAH Scholarship is expected to be awarded in 2026.

Fellowships

Fellowships are offered to both early-career and established researchers, and are usually granted to provide financial assistance for a specific research project or output. Early-career fellowships connect recipients with partnering institutions and mentors, helping those individuals embarking on a career in arms history or a related field to establish important networks.

Grants & Prizes

CSAH awards an annual Armax Publication Grant, supporting the publication of an original research article in Armax: The Journal of Contemporary Arms. An annual Armax Prize for Original Research is also awarded to the most outstanding original research article published in Armax during the previous volume year. We hope to launch several smaller grants and prizes in 2027 and beyond.

Grants & Prizes

Armax Publication Grant

The Armax Publication Grant supports the production of a single original research article, or two shorter Notes, for submission to Armax: The Journal of Contemporary Arms. The grant is awarded by CSAH to a researcher with a demonstrated track record of academic writing who proposes a clearly defined, focused project on an approved subject within the study of contemporary arms or munitions (ca. 1800 to present day). Funding is intended to enable research that would not otherwise be possible—such as travel, access to archives or collections, or the acquisition of specialist literature—and recipients receive practical and academic support from CSAH. All submissions are subject to Armax’s standard double-blind peer-review process, and receipt of the grant does not imply acceptance for publication.

The ARES Emerging Experts Fellowship

Available to early-career researchers undertaking or having recently completed postgraduate study, the ARES Emerging Experts Fellowship supports the production of a discrete, publishable output—such as a journal article, technical report, or literature review—on a topic related to the study of contemporary arms or munitions (1800 to present day). Fellows are selected based on research excellence and potential, and are matched with a mentor from the ARES team. The fellowship provides financial and practical support to advance original, high-quality research and help position recipients as future leaders in the field.

The CFM Early-career Fellowship

The Cody Firearms Museum (CFM) Early-career Fellowship is awarded to a researcher with fewer than three years of experience in arms history or a related field, and specifically includes those individuals seeking to pivot from an unrelated field or professionalise their informal experience (e.g., collectors). The CFM Early-career Fellowship is awarded to support a project which will benefit from access to the world-class collections of the museum, which forms part of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming. Interactions with the Museum’s symposium, Arsenals of History, and journal, Armax: The Journal of Contemporary Arms, are encouraged.

Scholarships

CSAH Scholarship

The Centre for the Study of Arms History (CSAH) Scholarship is intended to support postgraduate students undertaking advanced academic study in arms history or closely related fields. The first CSAH Scholarship is expected to be awarded in late 2026, with the intention of awarding multiple scholarships in subsequent years as the programme develops.

CSAH Scholarships are open to students who have been accepted for postgraduate study at a recognised university in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States, and whose proposed course of study demonstrates a clear and sustained focus on arms history. The scholarship is intended to support academic excellence, encourage original research, and help develop the next generation of scholars working in the arms history field.

In addition to financial support, CSAH Scholars will benefit from engagement with the Centre’s wider research community and professional networks. Where appropriate, scholars may receive guidance on publishing and professional development, including advice on preparing work for leading journals in the field, as well as edited volumes, museum publications, research reports and other scholarly or public-facing outlets. CSAH maintains active connections with museums, publishers, collectors, and industry specialists, and seeks to support scholars in building professional relationships that can inform their research and contribute to long-term career development in arms history and related fields.
