Armax Publication Grant
Overview
Funder: Armax: The Journal of Contemporary Arms
Application deadline: 30 November
Award made: January–February
Value of award: $1,000 USD
The Armax Publication Grant is awarded by the Centre for the Study of Arms History (CSAH) to support the production of a single original research article, or two shorter Notes, for submission to Armax: The Journal of Contemporary Arms. The grant is designed for researchers with a demonstrated track record of academic writing who propose a clearly defined, focused project within the approved scope of Armax, covering the study of contemporary arms and munitions from circa 1800 to the present day.
The grant provides financial support for research that would not otherwise be possible, including travel, access to archives or specialist collections, or the acquisition of rare or specialist literature. Recipients of the grant also receive practical and academic guidance from CSAH staff. All submissions are subject to Armax’s standard double-blind peer-review process, and receipt of the grant does not guarantee publication.
Grants will be awarded in December–January each year. Funds may be used over the subsequent eight months to support research activities directly related to the proposed project. Grant recipients are expected to submit the resulting research to Armax within the same year wherever practicable. Additional funds may be awarded at the discretion of CSAH for exceptional circumstances or needs.
If you have any questions, please email us at research@armshistory.org
Eligibility
Applicants must be researchers with a track record of academic or professional writing, including work done in furtherance of higher education. Applicants should propose a clearly defined research project focusing on contemporary arms or munitions (ca. 1800–present), and be able to demonstrate that the funding requested will enable research that could not otherwise be undertaken. Funding can be applied toward research activities such as:
Travel to archives, libraries, or collections;
Access to specialist or restricted collections;
Acquisition of rare or hard-to-access literature; and
Other research-related costs directly supporting the proposed project.
A finished article must be published in the peer-reviewed journal, Armax: The Journal of Contemporary Arms, and should conform to the journal’s high publishing standards and author’s guidelines, available via their website. Applicants should be aware that funding does not guarantee acceptance for publication. In the case that a funded article is not accepted for publication by Armax, applicants will work with CSAH to find an alternative outlet.
Applicants may be located in any country other than the following: Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Yemen. Applicants from certain other countries may be subject to further vetting.

Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:
Relevance and originality of the proposed article: Does the article engage with topics, objects, or methods that have been underexplored, or does it provide a new perspective on existing material? Will it make a significant contribution to the field of contemporary arms history?
Feasibility and clarity of the research plan: Is the project achievable within the proposed timeline?
Impact of grant funds: Will the grant enable the writing of an article that is otherwise unlikely to be submitted?
Quality of writing and presentation: Is the application clearly written and persuasive, effectively communicating the significance and impact of the proposed article(s)?
